Tribute by Francis’ grandson, The Revd Richard McLaren at Montrose Air Station at the 100th anniversary of his death.
We remember and give thanks for the life of Francis McLaren, giving thanks especially:
For his generosity of spirit so that his gifts and talents were shared as widely as they were;
For his pioneering interest in new technologies within the armoured car division at Gallipoli and in the Royal Flying Corps;
For his work within Parliament and as MP for Spalding;
For the causes dear to him of promoting the new General Insurance Act and of Land Reform.
Within his family, as a loving son, for the happiness he knew and gave in his marriage to Barbara, as a father to Martin and Guy and as a source of unity for us, his successors, who never knew him in his lifetime but who honour his name.
We give thanks for Francis’s courage and sacrifice, believing that God will work in him the good purpose of his perfect will.
We remember and give thanks for all who have trained and gone out from here to fly in the service of their country, especially today, a century later, for the pilots of 1917 who died in the service of the Royal Flying Corps and who are recorded on the Roll of Honour kept here [at Montrose].
