Francis Walter Stafford McLaren born to Charles, 1st Baron Aberconway and his wife Laura (née Pochin). The youngest of four children, he grows up at Bodnant, North Wales.
Educated at Eton and Balliol College Oxford.
1910
Aged 23, elected Liberal MP for Spalding in Lincolnshire.
1911
Marries Barbara Jekyll, niece of Gertrude Jekyll, in St Margaret’s Westminster. It is a marriage of the arts and politics: Barbara’s family are also at the heart of the cultural world of the time in a circle that includes Prime Minister Asquith and Sir Edwin Lutyens.
1914
Martin John McLaren born. He will eventually also become an MP.
1915
Guy Lewis Ian McLaren born.
1917
In July Barbara, Martin and Guy move to Montrose for a summer holiday to be near Francis while he trains in the RFC. After an idyllic month, Francis dies tragically on 30th August, aged just 31.
Francis is buried at Busbridge Church in Surrey, near the Jekyll home at Munstead. His headstone is designed by Lutyens. A memorial to him is created at Bodnant in the POEM – the family crypt – and he is included in memorials at school, university and the House of Commons.
1922
The Spalding War Memorial, also designed by Lutyens, is dedicated at Ayscoughee Park.
